Any one who grew up within a hispanic household knows who Luis Miguel is. He is 39 yrs. old, half Italian, half Mexican singer. You could almost describe him as a spanish Michael Bubble. The other day this song, Kokomo by the Beach Boys came on my IPod and I started car singing and dancing. My fiancee was so embarrassed he rolled the windows up and sank in more in to his driver’s side seat. i find it so strange that this is supposedly the most “popular” thing i’ve ever posted. mostly because a) it’s two sentences that took no thought other than a few minutes of typing in photoshop and b) in no way is it representative of what this blog is about. frankly, i’m glad the credit to me got taken off towards the beginning and now it’s simply floating around tumblrspace of its own accord.

however, i was reading some of the comments that people have added to it over the past day. some seem to think that the sentiment behind my statement is that people should be not be appreciative of the people that read their posts, and that it’s some sort of internet crime to announce this appreciation. by all means, please do that. i’m not the tumblr police. i recognize that people like to be valued, that it’s nice to know someone is listening, and that you want to give thanks to people who think you’re of interest. i myself feel extremely proud if my writing has meaning to someone who follows me, and will be the first to state that to the person.

what i’m contesting here is the issue of numbers. i’m looking specifically at those who say “thanks so-and-so, you’re follower XXX”, “i’m XXX away from XXX, please tell everyone you know to add me”, or “i just lost XXX followers, fuck them”. the only thing i get from those kinds of posts is that you are turning real people like yourself into meaningless numbers. that all you want is to have your little pixelated follower count to go up and up and up because it gives you some sort of feeling of self-worth.

appreciating the people that read your blog is one thing, but looking for an ego inflation through an ever-changing number is something completely different. i get bothered when people unfollow me because they have stopped caring about what i have to say, not because my follower count has dropped. and really i guess it just pisses me off to know that some of you could give a shit less that i read your posts to legitimately try to get to know you, not to raise your damn sidebar number.
